The Reds were in north London for semi-final, first-leg action on Wednesday. They had flown into the capital, with the intention being to take the same journey home. Bad weather was, however, to impact those plans.

According to , freezing fog prevented the aircraft carrying Liverpool’s squad back to the North West from reaching John Lennon Airport. Instead, they were forced to land in Birmingham. A coach and cars were then scrambled to get players up to Merseyside.
